Housefather Update

2014-Stark,JeffGreetings from the Clubhouse! Well, this is our 6th year with the DRU Clubhouse and we start the year with just about 50 members. Of course, the house is popular for fraternity social events and ceremonies, a good battleground for Wisconsin/Illinois sport team games on TV, a game of foosball, a quiet place to study during the day, as well as pledge (new member) events, and Monday night meetings when there is no pledge class. During the “new member education period”, meetings are held up on campus.

Every year there are changes and improvements made to the house. The big project this last year was replacing the badly worn and stained carpeting in the main suite with hardwood flooring—much easier to keep clean! Much thanks to DRU Alum Mark Benning who installed the new floors.

We’ve enjoyed monthly pizza parties with alums and actives, Homecoming, with the social gathering still called the “Smoker” on Friday evening and the morning waker-uppers, Alumni Assn. meeting, parade, and tailgate party just before the football game on Saturday. We have the Benefit Dinner in November, DRU History Day in January, and the end-of-the-year picnic at the Macy estate in early May; all activities where DRU alumni are welcomed.

You are also welcome to stop at the Clubhouse anytime. It is located on the corner of Broadway and Hartwell Ave. Come meet the actives and pledges and get a tour. If it feels awkward after the passage of years, let me know when you are going to be in town at jstark15@wi.rr.com and I will gladly meet you at the House, show you around, and introduce you to anyone who may be around. Don’t be shy! The main floor and lower level are rented by the Alumni Association for the use of our Actives, so it is YOU who are providing this building to them!

I hope to see you at one of the events, or if you visit Waukesha and would just like to stop at the Clubhouse. Remember, we are “Delta Rhos through life.”

New Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement

Staszewski, ZacharyCarroll University has hired, Zachary Staszewski ’11, a Delta Rho Upsilon alumnus (pledged Fall 2007), to serve as the Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement as of August 1st, 2017. After graduating from Carroll, Zachary earned a Masters in Higher Education from St. Cloud State University and served as their Graduate Hall Director. After receiving his degree, he moved backed to Milwaukee where he served as a Resident Director at Marquette University for the past 4 years. Zachary is happy to be back at Carroll after he first came to campus as a freshman 10 years ago. When asked about his return to Carroll, Zachary stated the following:

“It’s a privilege to be back at Carroll in this position! I’ve noticed that while I have my bearings on campus, from my time here as a student, there have been some impressive changes to campus that I have been able to appreciate as a staff member. I’m excited to not only engage with Carroll alumni, but strengthen my roots through DRU and contribute back to the organization being back on campus. I credit my time at Carroll for my current successes and owe a lot of my development to organizations I participated in – DRU specifically. The autonomy of a local organization, while sometimes frustrating, really requires the active body to take exceptional ownership over the group. I grew a lot through planning events, promoting DRU to other students, and representing DRU on campus. As an alumnus of the organization, I’m ready to give back and see my position perfectly positioned to continue building connections between the active chapter and alumni body.”

Next time you get an invitation to a Carroll Alumni event, consider attending knowing a fellow DRU alumnus would love to see you there. If you’re planning to attend Homecoming (which you should), be sure to congratulate Zachary on his new position when you see him at this year’s Homecoming festivities October 6th and 7th.

Delta Rho Upsilon Website

2014-Webb,WyattOver the years, the Delta Rho Upsilon website located at deltarhoupsilon.org has had many faces. Like many websites run by volunteers, there were times when the site was a great place to go for information and others when it was completely out of date. The alumni association does try and keep it as up to date with the information we have. However, being a site hosted by a single alumnus at his cost there are obvious limitations, so you can help. I encourage any alumni that have suggestions for improvement to let me know. I welcome additional volunteers with IT or website design experience to lend a hand, so please contact me so we can collaborate on ways to work together! The membership mailing list serve has been moved to MailChip, so you’ll see messages from dru.techchair@gmail.com they’ll have MailChip branding on them for now. Again, if others have resources to help let me know. We will continue to strive to keep the site fresh and up to date. Please take a minute and visit the site and let me know if you have any thoughts.

New Faculty Advisor

Tanner, MikeThe Fraternity welcomed a new faculty/staff advisor in the Fall of 2016, our own Alumni board member, Dr. Mike Tanner ’07 (pledged Fall 2003). The fraternity’s previous advisor, Dr. Jason Freund, was no longer able to fulfill the role at the start of the 2016 school year. Fortunately, the University recently relaxed the requirements for student org advisors to include part-time employees and staff which allowed Mike to be eligible for the role. He has been serving as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Chemistry at Carroll since 2015. During his years as an active, Mike held many positions with the organization, including Treasurer and Pledge Warden. After graduation from Carroll in 2007, Mike earned a Masters in Forensic Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2008. He returned to Milwaukee and worked for Aurora Health Care in their Forensic Toxicology laboratory. In 2011 he enrolled full-time in the graduate program at the Medical College of Wisconsin and recently earned his PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2016. He currently lives in Milwaukee and manages a clinical toxicology testing facility on the north side of Milwaukee. Mike has served with the DRU Alumni Association since 2009. When asked about his new role within organization, Mike said,

“I’m happy to be able to serve the Fraternity in this capacity and help the organization remain in good standing by meeting the Greek Life requirements set forth by the University. I think it’s a unique position I am in to serve as the school’s employee representative for the fraternity as well as an alumnus of the fraternity. I hope to be able to provide meaningful contributions to both interests but of course look out for our guys.”

The fraternity is very fortunate to have a caring group of Alumni that are willing to contribute their time and energy into making helping the organization and ensuring it endures for many more years.

Alumni Update

The Alumni Association has been working very hard trying to stay connected with all our members throughout the years. Our list of members with valid contact information stands at ~575 and unfortunately, hasn’t changed much since the last article. This highlights the importance of keeping our records current and informing the Alumni Association of a change in residence so that we may update our records. We rely on our current membership to help the Alumni Association reach out to friends and pledge brothers to encourage them to provide their current contact information.

The fraternity website (www.deltarhoupsilon.org) contains an “Update Info” button that makes it easy to input your information into a form that can be added directly to our database. The website also contains a list of men who were members at one point or another, but we have no valid contact information for them or any information other than a name. We believe that of the almost 600 people that read this communication, someone will have information on at least one person they can pass along to the Association. So please take the time to read through the list and recognize the name of a brother you’re still in contact with.

Electronic communication has become the norm for reaching out to a large audience and we have embraced this form of communication because it allows us to communicate events and interesting news easily. Currently, we have email addresses for only 50% of our ~600 names. If you provide nothing else, please consider supplying your current email address. The active body hosts many events throughout the year and would love to see more alumni stop by and show their support.

As always, the information you provide is only used by the Alumni Association to contact its membership, we will never give your information to any other parties.

In summary, I ask of you the following:

  • Supply a current email address
  • Update your info on www.deltarhoupsilon.org
  • Check the website for names of past members you’re still in touch with

As always, we will never publish or give out your information to any mailing lists or to the school. This information is strictly for use by the Delta Rho Upsilon Alumni Association.

In Brotherhood,

Mike Tanner Fall 2003

Active – Alumni Pizza Parties

The DRU Alumni organization will again be hosting Pizza Parties at the Clubhouse and inviting all Active members and DRU alums to a monthly eat & greet (2-3X/semester on dates and times to be announced) to share memories and lively conversation. For alums that have attended recently, (to name a few) Norm Goeshko, Ron Engel, Dave Rosenwald, Gary Marquardt, and Jim Toth (Hey that’s almost like a Peace with Grease reunion!), along with “regulars” like John Macy, Scott Mohr, Mike Tanner, and of course everybody’s Housefather, Jeff Stark, its a great time to share memories, meet our very engaging active members and talk about the fun and challenges of being a DRU brother in 2017.

Hope to see you there!

Bob Taylor Pledge Class Fall 1973

P.S. For those of you reading this and are graduates of the 40’s, 50’sor 60’s, and have in your possession a 10 x 12 copy of one or more of the following year’s DRU composites, please let us know so we might be able to get a copy, as these are missing: 1967, 1961, 1957 and earlier. We’d love to have a complete set on hand for our website, Homecoming, and our History event. Thanks Bob

Wright House

Wright House Upgrades Help Wright House be a True Home for our Fraternity and Sorority Members

The Greek community at Carroll University has a rich history of fostering growth for its members, the university and surrounding community. For more than 100 years, the fraternities and sororities at Carroll University have continued to uphold the the ideals of scholarship, leadership, community service and friendship.

Wright House is designated as the fraternity and sorority office, programming, and meeting space on campus since none of the sororities or fraternities are currently allowed to have houses and the Greek Suites in the dorms were turned into classrooms. The historic house provides an office suite on the second floor for each chapter to decorate and use as a hang out area, for small meetings, and for recruitment. The first floor consists of a computer work area, conference room, kitchen/dining area, and a lounge. Wright House is used by our chapters, Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, Greek Activities Panel, and Greek student staff members on a daily basis and is the hub of community-wide events.

But Wright House needed help. The kitchen appliances were old and not energy efficient. The lounge felt cold and not homey. When asked the fraternity and sorority members what could be improved about Greek Life, time after time members say they would like to increase the casual use of Wright House by making it feel more comfortable and welcoming.

Donations were made. The Delta Rho Upsilon alumni association as well as numerous individual DRU actives and alumni donated money even though the Active Body does not make use of the facility as much as the other groups since they have the Clubhouse. The money raised from this project was used to invest in new appliances for the kitchen and new furniture and accessories for the lounge.

Alumnus Opens Milwaukee Art Gallery

Q & A with Alumnus Frank Juarez ’97 by Ethan Marse ’17

FrankJuarez

What inspired you to open a gallery in Milwaukee?

I have been in the gallery business for about a decade both in Milwaukee and in Sheboygan. I wouldn’t say that I was inspired to re-open a gallery in Milwaukee, but rather motivated to re-establish the gallery back in the city that I grew up in.

What type of artists will you be showing?

The Frank Juarez Gallery is primarily focused on working with Wisconsin artists. Exhibited works range from paintings to collage, sculpture to drawings, and installation to mixed media.

What can people expect from your gallery opening?

What I am hoping to see are people leaving with a positive gallery experience, being exposed to meaningful and significant works created in Wisconsin, and to provide a platform for the community to develop connections with our artists.

Is the Carroll community invited to the opening?

I would love to see people from the Carroll community visit the Frank Juarez Gallery. After all, I am a product of the Carroll educational experience.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The Frank Juarez Gallery is committed to supporting artists working in painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation, and mixed media works. We aim to create an accessible, educational, and engaging exhibition space for our artists, audience, and community. FJG exhibits and promotes the works of artists who value innovation, technical discipline and artistic excellence in their chosen medium. The gallery is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and by appointment.

To stay up to date with the Frank Juarez Gallery, visit the gallery web site and follow on Instagram and Facebook.

Donald Edward Liebmann found eternal peace and healing on May 10, 2017. Heaven
gained the most amazing husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, teacher,
coach, hunter and fisherman.

Born in Milwaukee on March 4, 1952, to Walter and Arline Liebmann, Don enjoyed
sports, hunting and fishing.

He met his wife Margaret “Peg” Liebmann at Carroll College. In their 40 years of marriage they raised
two daughters, Megan (Nick) McCoy and Melissa (Eric) Woolridge, and welcomed five grandchildren:
Cole, Anna, Emma, Brielle and Gavin.

Together, Don and Peg embarked on many family vacations, and cheered on countless baseball, basketball
and volleyball games. There are so many wonderful memories his girls will forever cherish, including
those still to be made at Don and Peg’s cabin on Archibald Lake.

He also shared his life with his loving siblings, Sue (Bill) Lazarski, Al (Linda) Liebmann and Judy (Ed) Peters;
brother-in-law, Russ Pitzner; many nephews and nieces, and great friends.
Don spent much of his life outdoors and was surrounded by others that enjoyed it just as much. He was
involved with the Oakland Conservation Club, Wisconsin Conservation Congress, WI Football Coaches
Association and the Cooksville Lutheran Dartball Team. He was a certified Wisconsin Hunter Safety Instructor
and Bow Hunter Safety Instructor.

As a well-respected teacher in the Johnson Creek School District for over 30 years, he earned one of the
first Teacher of the Year awards.

Don treasured every moment he spent with his grandchildren and whether a baseball game, dance recital
or night out fishing, we know he’ll still be with us. Words cannot express how much he is loved and
will be missed.
